THE JOURNEY
Time is part
of the artist.
Discovering extraordinary wood. Respecting what it has become.
PYRO begins with naturally weathered rescued wood, often found along Florida’s Indian River shoreline. The philosophy is to discover and preserve its extraordinary character.
The moment of recognition
A piece can appear overlooked or finished with its journey. Then its grain, shape or weathering catches the artist’s attention. That recognition is where the rescue begins.
Each piece has its own beginning
Molten Soul began with a heavily insect-damaged laurel oak that had to be taken down. As the wood was cleaned, fragments came apart. Arranging them close to their natural relationship revealed the paths for its lava accents.
The cedar-root piece followed another direction: its attached barnacles and natural form were preserved with clear glossy epoxy. Different encounters, different responses to the wood.
Tradition isn't a boundary.
Pyro Artwork explores the possibilities that emerge when the usual methods are questioned. Reclaimed driftwood planks can become an expressive frame rather than an imitation of manufactured molding.
One such frame, created by the PYRO artist, surrounds chalk drawings by Gerry Parham. The frame and the drawings are distinct artistic contributions. The meeting of the two is an example of how reused materials can open unexpected creative doors.
